Haunting, escapist and moving. Drawing on influences such as John Martyn, Roy Harper and Laura Marling, Spencer creates modern folk music which owes as much to the Yorkshire countryside as it does to the English folk revival. Her striking vocals, complex reverb-driven acoustic guitar and adept song-writing have secured Spencer’s most recent shows opening for Ralph McTell, Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople) and Martin Stephenson & The Daintees.
Spencer will be joined by Foss Paterson providing atmospheric jazz-infused keys. Their work together has been championed by Iain Anderson of BBC Radio Scotland and has been described as “late night [John] Martyn & [Danny] Thompson territory”. Paterson’s back catalogue consists of a whole host of folks including John Martyn, Fish and Jacqui McShee.
Her debut studio release ‘Good Morning Sky’ was launched in May 2017 and saw Spencer working with a number of outstanding musicians, namely Ted McKenna (Rory Gallagher, SAHB) and Foss Paterson (John Martyn, Jethro Tull). Recorded in Glasgow, the atmosphere of the mini-album “recalls some of the essence of [John] Martyn’s best music. The songs are treated to a delicate and mature guitar style to go with her distinctively graceful voice” – NORTHERN SKY MAGAZINE
“Yorkshire’s Katie Spencer brings together fine songwriting and excellent guitar work … her dense, brooding and heartfelt songs have an attractive dreamlike quality that suggest a bright future” – RNR MAGAZINE
“As debuts go Katie Spencer is clearly off to a flying start” – FOLK RADIO UK
“The laid-back jazz-infused melodies from Foss Paterson provide some beautiful jazz lines which call to mind Danny Thompson” – FOLK RADIO UK
“For Katie Spencer, the heavens and the horizon are crystal clear with her album Good Morning Sky, the gentleness supplied by the artist and the troupe of players that surround her throughout the five songs on the E.P. is heartfelt, a passionate whisper to the dawn and a dare: take me on, growl to the darkness in us all” – LIVERPOOL SOUND AND VISION
