‘Love Is The Way’ is the new album from Eddi Reader on Rough Trade Records. Since the early 80s Eddi has helped to define the landscape in which folk artists and singer-songwriters navigate. Her incomparable voice and positive outlook have been a much loved fixture in the British music scene since her band, Fairground Attraction, hit the charts with the song "Perfect" in 1988. After Fairground Attraction's breakup, Reader ventured onto a solo career, to the delight of both fans and critics, most recently her internationally acclaimed release ‘The Songs Of Robert Burns’.
Eddi’s self produced new album sees her move away from the traditional folk leanings of her last two releases and into a rich vein of modern classic songwriting. Her aim is to communicate a similar feeling of intimacy and honesty with her music. “I love the way when you’re listening to a Willie Nelson record for example, you just feel like you’re in the room with the performer and the musicians - you feel like you’re in company…”
With ‘Love Is The Way’ she continues to fly the flag for original, distinctive songwriting. “I have a passionate love of instinctive, beautiful songs as well as a slightly insane attachment to romantic chord structures,” explains Eddi. “Words that speak of some universal humanist truth, that can be 'thrown away' with no regrets.”
Eddi produced the record herself in a little studio in Glasgow above the Glasgow to Helensburgh train line. The recording sessions were originally earmarked for extra tracks for a ‘Best Of Eddi Reader..’ record, but Eddi was so taken with the results that they were achieving that the decision was elected to scrap the Best Of and proceed with the new record you hold in your hands.

Winner of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Live Act in 2001, Roy Bailey and Tony Benn's presentation of "The Writing On The Wall" is a sell out success at theatres and festivals up and down the country.
A presentation of an alternative view of how we got where we are today and where we could be going next, Roy and Tony give us a history of dissent in words and song, drawing on first hand experiences and the stories of the people they don't teach us about in schools. A hugely entertaining, and inspiring, show. |

Winners of the BBC Radio 2 “Best Live Act” Award 2009, The Demon Barbers perform Traditional English folk music, song and dance but with an exciting twist. Over 126 Years of Proud History!
In addition to having a first class and formidable reputation for highly entertaining concerts of wide public appeal, the Brighouse and Rastrick Band has many other notable triumphs to its credit in the highly competitive contesting field - the major means bands use to match themselves against each other. Whilst obviously not winning every competition they enter, they are often amongst the prizes and their record of major championship victories since they first came to national prominence during the 1920s is impressive;
- July and September Belle Vue Champions: 1929
- September Belle Vue Champions: 1932, 1933, 1934, 1936, (barred 1935)
- British Open Champions: 1978
- All England Masters Champions: 1993, 1998, 2001
- National Champion Band of Great Britain: 1946, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1980,1997, 1998
- Champion Band of Europe: 1981, 1998
- World Champion Band: 1968, 1969
- BBC Band of the Year: 1968
- Granada TV Band of the Year: 1975
- ‘Brass in Concert’ Champions: 2006
- Saddleworth Open Champions: 2006, 2007 and 2008
- Saddleworth Whit Friday March Contests - more prizes won than any other band.
One extra 'purple patch' in this fine record came in 1998 when the band held concurrently the English Masters, British National and European Championships, a unique 'Triple Championship, still not equalled!Amongst the general public Brighouse and Rastrick is perhaps most popularly known for its famous 1977 hit parade success 'The Floral Dance' for which it won both Silver and Gold Discs for massive record sales and tremendous national and international acclaim. In this new century, the band continues to strive for the highest standard in whatever it does, but keeping one eye on its past and its proud traditions.
It is still true to say that no other public subscription band has held such high status for as long as the Brighouse and Rastrick Band!

There is no doubt that after 35 years as a professional musician Martin is, right now, better than ever. Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling. His solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving. There is no-one who has more successfully combined the diverse elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music than Simpson. His 15 years living in the US were well spent. In addition his own songwriting he has produced some real gems, from the truck-stop epic, “Love Never Dies” to the profoundly moving “Never Any Good”.His career includes collaborations on stage and record with June Tabor, Kelly Joe Phelps, Jackson Browne, Danœ, Martin Carthy, Cara Dillon, David Lindley, Roy Bailey, Martin Taylor, David Hidalgo, Steve Miller, Dick Gaughan and many more.
Simpson is a very regular nominee in the BBC Folk Awards and received Musician of the Year in 2002 and 2005, a nomination in 2009 and album of the year for Bramble Briar in 2002. 2008 saw an incredible 5 nominations and 2 wins. Whether playing American old-time music, blues, a Dylan song or his own material, Martin Simpson is unpredictable, individual and a guitarist of immense subtlety.
“Although it’s his guitar virtuosity that’s frequently lauded, it’s as an interpreter of song that Martin Simpson really scores. Simpson delivers narratives with colour and conviction. Fittingly be-gonged several times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Martin Simpson is taking his place, not just as a hero for guitar-besotted acolytes but as one of the national treasures of English traditional music." BBC Radio 2 Folk & Acoustic Reviews
"His performances elicit powerful emotions and subtle, understated beauty" Guitar Player
"Distinctive coiled-spring beauty and power. A revelation...Exquisitely at one with the All-English repertoire..A master " Mojo

Playing an utterly unique blend of rock & roll, folk, and quirky Americana, Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams have been called "the hillbilly Pink Floyd," which is an apt description, particularly if you throw in elements of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, the Band, Neil Diamond, and maybe even some Frank Zappa too.
The band taps a broad palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge cinematic anthems. Possessing an exotic instrumental arsenal consisting of glockenspiel, theremin, mandolin and accordion, in addition to standard rock regalia - they are endowed with a devoted populist appeal on the festival circuit and beyond. Lead singer and main songwriter Joziah Longo (guitar and harmonica), multi-instrumentalist Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, flute) and Sharkey McEwen (guitar, mandolin, and backing vocals) worked together in the late '80s and early '90s and got a close, hard look at the pressures and insanities of the major-label music machines. The trio walked away from it all and settled in the Sleepy Hollow area of the Hudson River Valley in New York, where, enlisting percussionist and drummer Tony Zuzulo in 1998, they formed Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams (there is no one named Gandalf or Murphy in the band).
Known for electrifying live performances and a down-to-earth connection to audiences, the group delivers a quirky, versatile, and good-humoured show that works as well in small folk clubs as it does on large festival stages, and has built a large and loyal fan following. Fiercely independent, the group runs its own label, High Noon Records, and has released 3 critically acclaimed studio albums - 'THE GREAT UNRAVEL’, ‘FLAPJACKS FROM THE SKY’ and ‘ A GOOD THIEF TIPS HIS HAT.Playing PPlaying an utterly unique blend of rock & roll, folk, and quirky Americankk

Although best known as one of the UK's most respected singer-songwriters, Charlie Dore enjoys a multi-faceted career that includes acting in film, TV & radio, screenwriting and composition for film and TV and even comedy-improvisation. She has made five albums of her own songs, the last two of which, "Sleep All Day" and "Cuckoo Hill", saw a return to her acoustic folk-country roots and won her excellent reviews. In 2008 Charlie won the International Acoustic Music Awards Grand Prize as well as First Prize Folk with her song "Looking For My Own Lone Ranger".
Her enduring radio classic, 'Pilot of the Airwaves' was the first of many successful songs that lead the way for an impressively diverse list of artists to record her material, including Tina Turner, George Harrison, Lisa Stansfield, Paul Carrack, Ricky Ross, Sheena Easton (US No 4), Celine Dion and Jimmy Nail, for whom she wrote "Ain't No Doubt" a UK No 1. Although her solo albums favour her more eclectic, acoustic side, Charlie continues to court diversity with collaborations, notably with Souled Out, who remixed her single "Time Goes By" to produce a European club hit (Italy No 6, Israel No 1), British underground dance dons, Slacker, ("Space County") and Pete "Boxta" Martin, whose forthcoming album "Slide" features her as guest vocalist.
Charlie released a new album, in July 2009 “The Hula Valley Songbook” - a collection of American hillbilly, swing and popular favourites of the 1930's. These are songs originally recorded by artists such as Jimmie Rodgers, Milton Brown and Al Bowlly. Named after her first band, Hula Valley, the album features several guests, including Beth Nielsen Chapman, who duets with Charlie on the Rodgers classic, 'Roll Along Kentucky Moon'
"File under treasure" Charlie Gillett, Observer Music Magazine
‘’A dream of a voice that glides from folk and country to jazzy cabaret" The Telegraph
‘‘Playful and clever- a wonderful kind of bittersweet pastoral Englishness" Americana UK
"The surety of Dore’s singing helps highlight the elegance and candour of her songs" The Observer

Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies have been playing their songs and music of Northern England for a decade and a half around the folk festivals, clubs and concert stages of the world. "Acoustic simplicity coupled with electric vitality" was how they were described in their early days, and with half a dozen albums to their credit, along with solo albums by Jez and by other members of the group, their following has continued to increase. In 2006 alone they have played in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Belgium and of course all over the UK and Ireland. Strong vocals, backed by outstanding instrumental back-up on guitar, cittern, fiddle, fretless bass, keyboards and Northumbrian Pipes, have made them one of Britain's top attractions on the folk/acoustic/celtic circuit. |

Based in Glasgow since their formation in 2001, KOSHKA came together as a result of Oleg Ponomarev, Nigel Clark and Lev Atlas' mutual love of music as diverse as classical, folk and hotclub. Although no strangers to the big stage, having played to thousands during their respective careers, KOSHKA honed their sound playing intimate shows at Russian Cafe Cossachok and have rapidly become in demand as a world music act.
What distinguishes KOSHKA as a world class act, is not only the individual members' virtuosity, but also the fact that they play almost entirely original material, composed by Oleg Ponomarev, widely recognised as one of the leading composers of contemporary world music.
'A mesmerising mix of virtuosity, playfulness and emotional intensity which should not be missed' Celtic Connections
'Their version of world, gypsy and jazz sends a huge emotional surge that never lets up' The Daily Telegraph

Henry Priestman (born Henry Christian Priestman, 21 June 1955, Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, England) is an English rock singer, keyboardist, record producer and songwriter.
Priestman studied music at the Liverpool College of Art. In the late 1970s he played with the British power pop band, Yachts. In 1980, Priestman was one of the co-founders of It's Immaterial. During the 1980s and 1990s he was a member of The Christians. Priestman has also been used as a session musician by both Bette Bright and Mike Badger. Priestman played keyboards on Badger's albums, Lo Fi Acoustic Excursions by Mike Badger & Friends (2004), The Onset (2005), and Lo Fi Electric Excursions by Mike Badger & Friends (2006).
Priestman was the producer of Mark Owen's 2003 Top 5 album, In Your Own Time. On 22 September 2008 Priestman released his debut solo album, The Chronicles of Modern Life.[2] On 6 April 2009, he was interviewed by James Hoggarth on BBC Radio Humberside.[3]
His song – “Don’t You Love me No More” on his solo album reached Number One in the World Music Charts in March 2009.
Friday 18th June, Main Hall, Leisure Complex, 8.00pm
Henry Priestman was born and raised in East Yorkshire. Formally a member of the multi-million selling Island Records’ band The Christians, Henry Priestman has managed to totally re-invent himself as a solo artist and due to the success of his 2009 debut solo album “The Chronicles Of Modern Life” has re-signed to Island Records (after 15 years as a producer/song-writer) and gained playlist and much support from Radio 2, and a stack of glowing reviews – indeed it was Johnnie Walker on the breakfast show who first coined the phrase “music for Grumpy Old Men” to describe the album, which seems to have given Henry a genre of sorts!
Having played live throughout the past year, including supporting Seth Lakeman at 2009 Beverley Festival, he’s looking forward to returning to Beverley 2010, and will also be able to pop down the road to see his Mum!
Press/media quotes about Henry Priestman’s “The Chronicles of Modern Life”:
“A solo album full of wit and love and disappointment and vitriol… perfect pop decorated with spikiness and anger” **** Rock n Reel
“A master of the rueful observation” *** The Daily Mail
“A set of home-made, ramshackle pop songs...a welcome addition to a varied and charming back catalogue *** The NME
“Outstanding from start to finish, it provides a vibrant vehicle for Priestman’s distinctive voice underpinned by great songs, great musicians, and great arrangements. Highly recommended.” Folk Northwest
“it’s absolutely brilliant.....he’s found his voice!” Bob Harris, Radio 2

Dave Burland has retired twice in his life. In 1968 he left the Police Force to pursue a career in folk music, as a singer and guitar player. This particular period lasted until 1998 approx., when he took a proper job in which he had to wear proper trousers and, on occasions, a suit and tie.
During the aforementioned period of thirty years, he visited quite a few countries, made quite a few solo records, quite a few of which are no longer available, played quite a lot of clubs and concerts and festivals, and made session appearances on quite a few other persons' records including Kate Rusby, Nic Jones, Richard Thompson, Mike Harding, Tony Rose, Bob Pegg and quite a few others.
The period of 1998 to 2007 has been taken up by work with the very occasional engagement. However, in July 2007 all this changed when he retired for the second time. Hopefully, quite a few people will see this increased availability as quite a good thing. He is known to be quite looking forward to performing and seeing friends, some quite old and some quite new, and demonstrating his own controlled dynamism.
“I came up watching Carthy, Nic Jones and Dave Burland, who is a beautiful guitar player, a great accompanist.”

Jerry Harmon was born into a family rich in the tradition of music. His home, deep in the foothills of the Blue Ridge / Appalachian mountains, reverberated daily to the sound of music in many different forms.
Harmon’s musical career was launched at an early age, strumming a banjo fashioned from wood and groundhog hide by his uncle Gene. Radio programmes featuring Hank Williams Sr, Flatt & Scruggs and Ray Price also proved a lasting influence.
At the age of 12, with his Sears & Roebuck Truetone guitar in hand and an earnest determination, Harmon tackled the first of years of self givent music lessons from a book by the famed North Carolina guitarist Arthur Smith. After years of local and regional performing Harmon gained recognition as an outstanding guitarist, singer and songwriter.
He begin to appear at such events as North Carolina’s renowned Merle-Fest, The Bath International Music Festival, The Edinburgh International Festival, and The Winnipeg Folk Festival. He has shared the bill with some of America’s most celebrated musicians: Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Marty Stuart, Earl Scruggs, Dolly Parton and others.
Jerry has quickly gained recognition as an amazing performer in the UK and mainland Europe performing at major events there after years of success as a performer in America.
“Jerry Harmon is one of the best authentic artists you can find that is unblemished by the main-stream.”
Ricky Skaggs
“Discovering Jerry Harmon recently at the Bath Music Festival was a sheer delight! Listening to his southern drawl he could be nothing else but a country singer. Jerry’s songs such as ‘Food On The Table’ and ‘Back To The Country’ is country music at its best, real down home country sweet as your mamas apple pie…”
